The “Damage Rule” comes into play when a disc is knocked off the playing surface and, under its own momentum, re-enters the playing surface only to come into contact with another disc. This scenario is referred to as “damage” or a “damage play.”

Damage Rule |
When damage occurs, the following outcomes are applied:
1. Discs Leaving the Playing Surface:
The original disc that left the playing surface and subsequently re-entered it is removed from play and placed in the ditch. Additionally, any other discs that left the playing surface during the same play—whether due to the original disc or other factors—are also removed from play and placed in the ditch.
2. Discs Remaining on the Playing Surface:
Any discs that were displaced on the playing surface as a result of the damage remain in their new positions. They are not reset or returned to their original locations. This ensures that the flow of the game remains consistent without interruption.
3. Scoring a Twenty:
If a twenty is scored during a play involving damage, it is counted as 20 points regardless of the color of the disc.
4. Rule Suspension During Damage:
Once damage occurs, all other rules of play are temporarily suspended. For instance, under normal circumstances, a shot must make contact with an opponent’s disc (if present) for it to be considered legal. If this rule is violated, the shooter’s disc and any other discs it contacts that belong to the shooter are removed from the playing surface. However, during a damage play, this rule is disregarded. All discs remain in their new positions, and no penalties are applied for failing to make contact with an opponent’s disc. See the illustration above.
This rule acknowledges the chaotic nature of damage plays and prioritizes maintaining the game’s pace and fairness. It introduces a level of unpredictability while still ensuring that gameplay remains consistent and enjoyable.
